Some of the most special pieces in the Rooh collection are the ones my family and I find together when in Pakistan. When we’re in Karachi, we spend time exploring the textile markets, looking through piles of old quilts, Rallis, embroidered wall hangings and other handmade textiles from across Pakistan. We never really know what we’ll come across... which is part of the fun.

I’m often drawn to the one-off pieces, the vintage quilts from Sindh, colourful Rallis made from carefully stitched scraps of fabric, embroidered textiles from Kashmir and unusual wall hangings that you might not find anywhere else (I particulary love them with animals on!) Often there is only one of a particular piece. We might spend hours looking through textiles before finding something that feels right... it’s usually the colours, stitching, age or little details that catch our attention.

Sourcing with my family makes the process even more special. These aren't pieces chosen from a catalogue or ordered in bulk. They are textiles we have discovered together, each with its own character and history. I like that these pieces aren't made specifically for Rooh or produced in large quantities. They already exist, and each one has its own combination of fabric, colour, stitching and wear.
